Dylan has always been a "thief", and a very good one at that, but what he does with what he has purloined is the mark his genius . I am always a little surprised, at these people who discover that Dylan's style has roots in other people's work, I mean, where have they been ? Did they think he popped out of the head of Zeus , fully formed like Athena ? Dylan's ( and Garcia's) singing style come from their listening to the great "roots", R&B , country , etc., singers of the past . I t was (is) lack of knowledge of this music, that allows people to be shocked when they hear these influences . People who found (find) is voice grating or rough, never listened to Blind Willie Johnson, or Roscoe Holcom !
It is in the tradition of these "roots" music artists to "steal," and then change it, and then have it stolen by someone else .
Dylan is no God, some of his work is mediocre at best, ( stolen or original !). But when he is on, especially in the classic mid 60's albums , who the FUCK cares what in "unoriginal".
The reason I listen to The Stanley Brothers, The Carter Family, Blind Willie Mc Tell ( how many people checked him out after listening to that song of that name by Dylan?) etc, etc, is because of Dylan ( yes and Jerry Garcia ).
There are exceptional and original things about Dylan, but I think he is no less an artist , if we see him also as a part in the larger "American Roots" tradition.
